ROCK PROJECT SUMMER CAMP FAQs
Join us this summer for our premier Live Rock Band Summer Camps! Our summer camps are an immersive experience for all skill levels and grades 2 - 12. This year, we will be offering camps from 12-5pm with an option to sign up for early-care for only $3!
We spend our first day assessing skill levels and selecting songs, then the subsequent days learning and rehearsing the songs! We also select a band name, make a flyer/poster, create stencil tees, and so much more!
All camps culminate in a live performance after Camp ends on the Friday (6pm) of each camp! IMPORTANT: PLEASE BE SURE YOU ARE AVAILABLE TO ATTEND THE 6pm FRIDAY EVENING SHOW OF THE CAMP YOU SIGN UP FOR.
Instruments offered: Drums, Bass, Guitar, Voice, Piano/Keyboard; horn players are welcome but we do not offer direct instruction in these instruments:
Q: - Do the other kids registered for the session have some rock instrument experience?
A: Our camps are all mixed skill levels (unless otherwise noted in the promos). If there is a serious discrepancy in skill levels - enough to hinder progress on a song, or make it unpleasant for your player or other players at a higher skill level - we will have an instructor play the part in questions (last resort), or an experienced intern or House Band player (our in-house youth touring group) play on songs that need extra help. Those students are often 14 and older.
We do not discriminate on skill level, and encourage students to celebrate that everyone is learning and there is no "I'm better than you" attitude. The reality is that 5+ years experience doesn't really mean a whole lot until we know what they actually know and are capable of - We've had kids with that much experience and more who don't even know the names of the notes on command, or where any of the notes needed are, etc. We keep our student Student:Teacher ration as low as possible so everyone gets as much focused instruction as possible. Each day, each student will have some 1:1 time with an instructor/mentor helping them dial their parts and enhance their skills.
Q: Camps are open to ages 8 -18 which is an unusually wide range for a summer camp. How do you make the bands cohesive given potentially some members could be more than twice as old as others?
A: It has been a hallmark of our camps for the past nearly 13 years that we do not discriminate on age (between 8 and 18). We have had select situations when students feel too old for the camp, and we address that as needed. Everyone here is learning; we have 8 year olds who can utterly SHRED, and we have 16 year olds who can't play a lick. We're here to learn music, not compare ages. At the same time, we are not dismissing the reality that there can be some challenging social dynamics between the real youngsters and teens, and we address that as best we can. We do have a small population of interns ranging from 14-18 years old, and they are crucial when this dynamic arises to be there to socialize and connect with older students, skilled or not.
Q: Will my student definitely get to play their first instrument choice, or will you require him to try/play other instruments?
A: If you indicate a specific first choice, we will prioritize that instrument. Be sure you note any instruments the camp is full for, and the date that has been listed that it is full: If you sign up after that date and indicate an instrument that is already full at that date, we will prioritize their second choice and do our best to also get them on their first choice of instrument. Generally, we will guarantee at least 1 song on the first choice instrument, and that is at the very least - again this may all depend on skill; we've had many students show up claiming 5 years of experience who can't stay on time/rhythm to save their life; it isn't functional for this student to assign more than 2 songs. Most importantly, we are preparing a full live rock show in 4 days. If a student shows up ready to play and is exhibiting the skills needed, they will play on lots of songs.
